Family Says Diahlo Grant Didn't Have to Die

Police recovered a gun that Grant allegedly used, the Middlesex County prosecutor said.

New Brunswick, NJ - A vigil was held Saturday night in New Brunswick for Diahlo Grant, the man who was shot and killed Saturday morning by two uniformed Franklin police officers.

Grant was in Somerset sometime around 1 a.m. Saturday when he encountered the two uniformed Franklin police officers. The officers followed him across the town border on Somerset Street into New Brunswick and that's where he was shot. Few other details have been released yet by the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office, which is investigating the case. Prosecutors did say there was "an exchange of gunfire."

As of now, Grant's family and friends say they have more questions than answers about his death.

"He was definitely not someone who was aggressive, no one they would have to pursue and shoot down like that," said one relative, who asked not to be identified, told NJ.com.

Grant was shot six times – three times in the head and three times in the chest, his relatives told NJ.com. They said they don't know why he was confronted by police and they insist he would not have tried to run from police or shoot at them.

Police recovered gun Diahlo Grant used, prosecutor says

Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey said police recovered a gun that Grant used, according to NJ.com.

"There is no reason he would shoot at two – especially uniformed – police officers," said another relative. "Something here doesn't seem right."

Grant, 27, a father of seven, had warrants issued for him for non-payment of child support and for violation of probation on a drug charge, but it's not clear if that is why he was stopped and pursued early Saturday morning.
