Piscataway has seen a crime surge at the Motel 6 and Extended Stay, after the state started housing ex-cons there, the mayor said.

PISCATAWAY, NJ — A man was arrested after police say he stabbed another man and a woman Tuesday night at the Motel 6 in Piscataway.

Jared Skinner, 40, is charged with two counts of second-degree aggravated assault, plus illegal weapons charges.

At 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Piscataway Police received a 911 call from a woman at the motel saying she had been stabbed. When police got there, they found the woman with cuts on her face. They also found a second man with cuts on his face.

Four months ago, Piscataway Mayor Gene Wahler said in this news article that his town has become victim to a skyrocketing increase in crime, drugs and prostitution at the Motel 6 and the nearby Extended Stay, after the state of New Jersey and various social services agencies started housing ex-cons and the homeless at those two motels.

In the past two years, Piscataway Police have been called to those two motels for thefts and burglary, prostitution, drug sales and drug overdoses. There have been two meth lab explosions at the Piscataway Extended Stay, and people have been seen defecating in the streets and in front of local shops in that area.

"We know people just out of prison are being housed there. Somerset County Social Services is sending people there, and I believe Burlington County as well," Wahler said in December.

"There is no follow-up. It's become a petri dish of crime. We've had almost 700 police, fire and EMS calls from the Motel 6 this year alone," Wahler said, referring to 2025.
