New Brunswick Approves Paid Sick Leave

Only the 27th city in the U.S. to mandate paid sick time, and the 11th in New Jersey.

New Brunswick, NJ - The New Brunswick City Council approved an ordinance Wednesday night that mandates nearly all businesses in the city provide paid sick time for their workers.

New Brunswick is the 27th city in the nation to mandate paid sick time, and the 11th in New Jersey. New Brunswick is unique because their paid sick time law also includes provisions for employees dealing with domestic violence and sexual assault.

The controversial law has been about a year in the making. Supporters say paid sick time keeps healthcare costs down, as it allows people to recover at home, and prevents illnesses from spreading. Those against the bill said it increases costs to business owners.

The ordinance applies to most New Brunswick-based businesses, including temporary health services firms. However, businesses with less than five full-time employees are exempted due to their small size.

You must work at least 20 hours a week to be eligible for paid sick time. Part-time employees who work less than 20 hours per week are not eligible.
