New Brunswick Theater Cancels Kathy Griffin Show

The State Theater in New Brunswick said they decided to cancel her show "for the safety of our patrons."

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Are you a Kathy Griffin fan? Planning on seeing her show in November at the State Theater in New Brunswick? Both the State Theater and the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood canceled her upcoming shows, the venues announced Thursday. The State Theater said in a Facebook post they decided to cancel her show "for the safety of our patrons."

It's part of the continued fall-out after Griffin posted a photo of herself holding a bloody, decapitated head of President Donald Trump. Griffin created the image with the help of celebrity photographer Tyler Shields and it was published Tuesday. CNN canceled Griffin's annual appearance co-hosting their New Year's Eve event alongside Anderson Cooper. All who purchased tickets to see her in New Brunswick will get a full refund.

Griffin has apologized for the image, which both Trump and Chelsea Clinton said on Twitter was wrong and inappropriate. Trump in particular said his 11-year-old son was very upset by the image. Griffin continues her apology tour: She and her lawyer have scheduled a news conference for noon Friday in California.

“I sincerely apologize. I’m just now seeing the reaction of these images,” Griffin said in a Twitter video she released. “I’m a comic, I cross the line. I move the line, then I cross it. I went way too far. The image is too disturbing. I understand how it offends people. It wasn’t funny. I get it. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my career; I will continue. I ask your forgiveness. [I’m] taking down the image. [I’m] going to ask the photographer to take down the image and I beg for your forgiveness. I went too far. I made a mistake and I was wrong.”

Gov. Chris Christie, a vocal Trump ally, isn't buying it.

“She's disgusting," he said, according to News 12 New Jersey. "Ya know, that's all. I mean I could pile on more if you want, but I think she's disgusting. It's completely outrageous, and I don't think anybody should hire her again for anything,” the governor said.
