Police: Man Fired Gun Into Air In New Brunswick

A team of New Brunswick and Rutgers police officers arrested a Middlesex County man who they say fired a gun into the air in the city.

Police arrested a Middlesex County man who they say fired a gun into the air in New Brunswick.

According to a news release from New Brunswick Police Capt. J.T. Miller:

New Brunswick and Rutgers police officers assigned to the 5th and 6th Ward Neighborhood Police Team made the arrest around 10:30 p.m. Friday.

They heard the gunshot near Bayard Street, and when they went to the area to investigate, residents directed them to a man standing on a porch on the 100 block of Bayard Street.

As officers approached the man - later identified as Shaleik Stokes -- he ran into a backyard and hid under the back porch.

Police quickly took Stokes into custody and confiscated the handgun.

Stokes, 29, of North Brunswick, was charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.

New Brunswick detectives are continuing the investigation. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Detective Kenneth Abode at (732) 745-5217.
