Rutgers to Continue Football Series With Temple With Four Game Slate

The teams will play from 2020-2023.

Despite a move into the Midwest-based Big 10 conference next year, the Rutgers University football team will maintain at least one regional rivalry, with Temple.

The schools announced a four-game series that will take place between 2020 and 2023.

Rutgers hosts Temple on Sept. 19, 2020 and Sept. 17, 2022, while the Scarlet Knights visit the Owls on Sept. 11, 2021. The 2023 date has not yet been determined.

Rutgers holds a 20-15 lead in the series, including a 35-10 win at Lincoln Financial Field in 2012.

The teams meet as conference foes for the final time on Nov. 2 of this year. Next year, Rutgers moves to the Big 10.

The conference is made up of teams from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin.

Penn State is the closest current team to Rutgers in terms of geography, while Maryland will join the conference the same day as Rutgers, on July 1, 2014.

Rutgers was a member of the Big East football conference since its founding in 1991. The Big East’s last season sponsoring football was last season, but many of the football-playing schools, including Temple, now constitute the American Athletic Conference.

Rutgers will play one year in the American Athletic Conference in all sports. The conference football season begins Oct. 5, with a game against Southern Methodist that will be nationally televised on ESPNNews, the University announced this week.

That game begins at noon. The Scarlet Knights have a bye week this weekend.
