Two Rutgers Victims Robbed in Two Days in New Brunswick

New Brunswick, NJ - Two Rutgers affiliates were victims of robbery attempts in separate incidents in the past two days in downtown New Brunswick, city police report. The police would not specify if the victims were Rutgers students, professors or employees.

The most recent robbery was Wednesday night at approximately 9:40 p.m. near the intersection of Nielsen and Morris streets.

The victim, who is affiliated with Rutgers University, said he was walking on Neilson Street when he was approached by a man who assaulted him with a sharp object. The victim fell to the ground and the perpetrator checked his pockets for items of value, police said.

The perpetrator fled towards Tabernacle Street after failing to take anything from the victim. The victim sustained minor injuries and sought treatment at a local area hospital.

Attempted robbery at smoke shop Tuesday night

A day before that, on Tuesday night, a Rutgers woman said a man tried to rob her while she worked at the Amsterdam Smoke Shop at 29 Easton Avenue.

The woman, who is affiliated with Rutgers University, said she was managing the store at 6:50 p.m. when a man entered and, after inquiring about a purchase, displayed a handgun and demanded cash. She refused and the man fled in an unknown direction. The victim was not physically injured, police said.

The man was described as a tall black male, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, green vest, red undershirt, blue jeans, and a red American flag bandanna covering his face.

The New Brunswick Police Department asks that anyone with information on either robbery call the Detective Bureau at 732-745-5217. Rutgers police just announced a new text messaging service where students can text campus police if they need help.
