Water Company Will Knock On Doors In Piscataway

If you're uncomfortable letting someone into your home, you can check your water service line yourself. The company must replace lead pipes.

PISCATAWAY, NJ — In 2021, New Jersey passed a state law that requires all lead and galvanized steel water lines be removed by 2031.

That's why New Jersey American Water will be knocking on doors in Piscataway next week (starting Oct. 12) as part of its statewide Lead Service Line Replacement Program.

A vendor hired by NJ American Water, CDM Smith, will be knocking on doors. CDM Smith inspectors will knock on doors in designated neighborhoods and will ask permission from homeowners to come inside and visually inspect their water service line.

That 2021 law requires the water company to replace lead pipes.

If a service line is confirmed to be made of lead or galvanized steel, New Jersey American Water says it has to replace it, at no cost to the customer.

CDM Smith staff will carry official company photo ID badges and wear logoed, high-visibility vests. Residents should always ask to see identification before granting access to their property or home.

Contractors will never request payment, fees, or personal financial information.

Residents may continue to use their water as usual.
