NEW MILFORD, NJ — Feeding deer might seem harmless, but New Milford officials are reminding residents why they should avoid it.
The New Milford Board of Health warned that human food can harm deer by causing poor nutrition and dependence on people, according to an advisory.
The board also cautioned that feeding deer can increase deer populations, raise the risk of tick-borne illnesses and attract rats and other rodents.
Those problems can contribute to property damage and neighborhood conflicts.
Outdoor feeding is prohibited under Board of Health Ordinance BH4-5.0.
Residents are encouraged to enjoy local wildlife from a distance rather than feeding deer.
