NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ — Union County seniors are invited to apply for farmers market vouchers through the county's 2026 Farmers Market Nutrition Program, with distribution dates coming up this month at locations in Summit and Westfield.
The program, run by the Union County Board of County Commissioners and the Department of Human Services' Division on Aging, provides eligible seniors with vouchers to purchase fresh produce at local farmers markets. Vouchers must be used by Nov. 30, 2026.
The Division on Aging will distribute vouchers at the following locations in June:
To be eligible, applicants must be Union County residents age 60 or older and meet income guidelines. Monthly gross income may not exceed $2,461 for a single person or $3,337 for a married couple. Proof of age and residency is required.
Vouchers are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are limited in number.
"Everyone deserves access to fresh and nutritious food," said Commissioner Chairman Joseph Bodek. "The Farmers Market Nutrition Program helps us close the gap for seniors living on fixed incomes to a healthier diet. We want to encourage all eligible individuals not to wait until it is too late and apply soon."
Commissioner James Baker, liaison to the Advisory Council on Aging, said the program benefits the broader community as well. "These vouchers not only provide a vital resource and social outlet for seniors, they also help boost our economy and assist local farmers in building meaningful relationships with our community," he said.
Residents of several municipalities can also contact their local senior or community center directly to obtain vouchers: Hillside Senior Center, (908) 355-8928; Roselle Recreation Department, (908) 259-3036; Casano Community Center in Roselle Park, (908) 245-0666; Plainfield Senior Citizens Center, (908) 753-3506; and Rahway Senior Citizens Center, (732) 827-2016.
