NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ — A major public safety project in New Providence is getting a $1 million boost.
The borough announced Thursday that it received the funding through the Union County Improvement Authority's 2026 Capital Project Grant Program.
The money will support the New Providence Police Department Public Safety Building Addition and Renovation, according to the borough's announcement.
Borough officials said the planned improvements are intended to create a more modern, functional and efficient facility for police officers while strengthening public safety operations.
The award is part of a $10 million capital grant program supporting infrastructure projects in Union County municipalities.
The borough said the program does not require matching funds from local taxpayers.
Officials also thanked the Union County Improvement Authority and Union County Board of County Commissioners for supporting the project.
New Jersey Senate President Nicholas P. Scutari was recognized for helping secure state funding for the grant program.
"This is tremendous news for our community and an important investment in the men and women of the New Providence Police Department who work every day to keep our residents safe," the township said.
Officials said they look forward to moving the project forward, although the announcement did not provide a construction timeline or total project cost.
