The Berkeley Heights Environmental Commission is inviting all Berkeley Heights residents and those living in neighboring towns to fill out an online survey about building a Community Garden in Berkeley Heights. The survey can be found at www.surveymonkey.com/s/BHCLGarden.
The opportunity for building a community garden in Berkeley Heights arose from a grant submission to Sustainable NJ earlier this year. The Environmental Commission has been tasked with the job of maintaining Berkeley Heights' Sustainable NJ designation and the creation of a community garden helps them achieve this goal. A community garden would also create a space for like-minded gardeners to learn about organic gardening, try their hand at vertical gardening, square-foot gardening, or make organic compost. Instruction will be given by NOFA members, Master Gardeners of Union County, and area businesses. With many residents complaining about the ever-increasing deer population and the shady yards most homeowners have, the idea of a community garden has been growing steadily.
For those interested in serving on the Board as an advisor or to help with the creation of the by-laws, building, fundraising, or becoming a garden leader - a Board meeting will take place Mondays (September 23, October 7 and October 21) from 6:30-7:30pm in the back conference room of the Town Hall, located at 29 Park Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ.
