STEM To STEAM: Using programming skill to become NJ State "Film Production" Winners for 2016-2017 PTA Reflections
How New Providence 2-3 graders used their Scratch Programming skills to create animations and won NJ State Level PTA Reflections awards
Update June-4-2017: NJ State winner students received their PTA Reflections award at the state level ceremony on June-4-2017.
This is a story about how New Providence elementary students took interest in learning Scratch Programming, and applied their programming skills to create animations. They then submitted that to PTA Reflections and won Union County Level as well as NJ State Level awards.
In October 2016, Team AIRO (based in New Providence, NJ) has collaborated with JerseySTEM (a non-profit based in Chatham, NJ) to expand their community activity with the concept of "Young Students Teaching Younger Kids". That gave birth to a class at JerseySTEM where 7th grade boys of Team AIRO (Om Desai, Gyan Ghoda & Siddhant Desai) taught Scratch Programming to a bunch of younger kids, often as young as 2nd graders.

At the end of every class, to earn a certificate, students are required to submit & present a project. A few talented students from those Scratch Programming classes took a challenge to complete two projects: one to present in the class, and the other to submit for PTA Reflections. They have used Scratch Programming to create animation, captured a video of their animation, and participated in PTA Reflections competition under category: "Film Production".
And here they are..... Not only they have submitted to PTA Reflections, three of the students actually won awards :)
