Hurricane Sandy Barrels Toward Oakland, What You Need to Know

The borough says that residents have permission to use the parking lot at Our Lady of Perpetual Health and at ShopRite's "upper parking lot dirt area" to keep their cars safe and dry.

Officials warned Oakland residents in flood-prone sections of the borough to park their cars elsewhere ahead of Hurricane Sandy, in a press release issued on Sunday.

"You have permission to use the parking lot at Our Lady of Perpetual Health and at ShopRite in the upper parking lot dirt area," the press release read. "Please leave contact information on your dash board."

Borough officials also announced that garbage and yard waste will be picked up on Monday, and yard waste pick up is cancelled for Tuesday. No decisions have been made thus far on Wednesday recycling.

The Oakland Library and Senior Center are closed Monday and Tuesday. While other borough offices were open as of 10:30 a.m. Monday, they may close early, said Borough Administrator Richard Kunze.

The borough press release reminds residents to call 911 for emergencies and, for non-emergency assistance, call 201-337-6171.

The press release also links to a pair of websites that borough residents can go to for "up-to-date information." One is the borough website, the other is oaklandnjflood.com

The borough suggests that anyone "looking to help and assist others" visit the oaklandnjflood.com website, which was updated this morning to reflect information that was published on the borough's official website.

Hurricane Sandy is expected to make landfall late Monday evening, Wyckoff Mayor DePhillips told Patch. DePhillips was part of a conference call between New Jersey mayors, Gov. Chris Christie and his cabinet on Sunday evening.

"Atlantic City is expected to be the bull's eye [for the storm to make landfall] around midnight [Monday] night," said the Wyckoff Mayor.

Throughout Monday, however, sustained winds of 35 to 50 mph will be felt around the entire state, including the north, DePhillips was told, but once the storm comes inland the winds are expect to subside — possibly by late Tuesday.
