2 Cape May Co. Firefighters Head South To Help With Helene Rescues
Ocean City firefighter Matt Long and Cape May Lt. Bill Szemcsak were deployed to Asheville, North Carolina, to help with search and rescue.
ASHEVILLE, NC — Two local Cape May County firefighters are helping out with search and rescue efforts after Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on the south.
Ocean City A-Platoon firefighter Matt Long and Cape May Lt. Bill Szemcsak have both been deployed to the Asheville, North Carolina region with New Jersey Task Force 1, a FEMA Search and Rescue team.
That team is under orders to conduct continuous search and rescue operations in the region.

Long and Szemcsak are the only two members from Cape May County to be currently deployed, according to the Ocean City Firefighters Association.
Both will remain in the Asheville area until they receive further orders.

"We continue to wish the members of NJ-TF1 a safe deployment and return home to New Jersey," the Ocean City Firefighters Association said.
