$4.9M Grant Will Fix Ocean City Boardwalks

The state's new Boardwalk Preservation Fund will allow Ocean City to make updates to like improving storm resiliency.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — Ocean City is set to receive $4.9 million from the state to make repairs and upgrades to its Boardwalk.

The $4,859,175 comes from New Jersey's new $100 million Boardwalk Preservation Fund, established to upgrade Jersey Shore boardwalks.

In Ocean City's case, the funding will go towards repairing the deteriorated substructure near Third Street, improving storm resiliency and adding ADA-compliant ramps across the length of the Boardwalk, according to Mayor Jay Gillian.

"Our Boardwalk is one of the things that makes Ocean City unique, and it has been the centerpiece of family vacations for generations," Gillian said in his weekly mayor's update. "I'm grateful to the state for investing in this vital part of our economy, and it's good to know that we’ll be able to continue to keep the boards in great shape while increasing accessibility for all."

The 2.5-mile Boardwalk has been built and rebuilt several times throughout the years, thanks to things like fires and natural disasters.
