50th Ocean City Fishing Club Tournament Set For Oct. 27

Although teams from throughout the region participate, families and individuals are also encouraged to come out.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — The historic Ocean City Fishing Club will host its 50th annual Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 27, and families and individuals are all invited to participate.

The tournament, under the auspices of the Association of Surf Angling Clubs (ASAC), traditionally draws teams from fishing clubs throughout the tri-state area, according to Bobby Dever, who co-chairs the tournament along with Mike Collins.

“But residents and vacationers should know that you don’t have to belong to a team to participate in the tournament,” Dever explained. “Each year we have family members and individual anglers who register to fish on our beautiful Ocean City beaches — and some go home with trophies and bragging rights.”

Registration for the tournament will take place from 5:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. at the Ocean City Intermediate School, 18th and Bay Avenue. It costs $80 for a six-member team, while individuals can sign up for $15.

At registration, anglers are assigned two beach locations to fish. The first session takes place from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. After a half-hour break, the second session runs from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The tournament ends back at the Intermediate School with a free lunch, door prizes, and the awarding of trophies.

Thanks to the Ocean City Police Department, free one-day beach permits for four-wheel vehicles are available at registration. Although it helps to have a four-wheel drive vehicle, it is possible to motor on the street from one location to another, according to organizers.
