Amanda said she always has been a pretty good speller, but she was happy and surprised to emerge on top of the contest of students in grades 6 to 8.

She'll face stiff competition on Saturday, March 12, when she represents the intermediate school in the Tri-County Spelling Bee at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

Champions from 35 schools will vie for the chance to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee the first week of June in Washington, D.C. Amanda said she has been studying hard for the tri-county bee.

"I basically read the packet of words anywhere I can," she said.

Amanda also is active in student government and likes to run as a member of the school track and cross country teams. Her grandparents, Elaine and Ed Saler, understandably are very proud of her.

Good luck, Amanda! We'll be R-O-O-T-I-N-G for you!
