Amazing Shelf Cloud Rolls Over New Jersey During Storms (Videos)

It looked like a spaceship that was about to land.

It looked like a spaceship that was about to land. Alas, it was only a storm cloud - otherwise known as a "shelf cloud" - that rolled over the Jersey Shore when storms hit the area on Wednesday.

Several people captured the moment when the shelf cloud rolled over Cape May County, just narrowly missing the building tops in Wildwood Crest.

A shelf cloud is a low, horizontal, wedge-shape cloud that is attached to a thunderstorm cloud. The cloud is less intimidating than it looks: It's no produces the same kind of impact as any typical thunderstorm, even if it looks like an alien ship that's ready to wreak havoc.
