CAPE MAY COUNTY, NJ — Cape May County residents are being warned about a telephone scam involving callers who falsely claim to be with the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office. Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland and Sheriff Robert Nolan issued the alert, saying the callers tell people they owe money for fines or missed court appearances.
According to the alert, the callers threaten victims with arrest warrants if payment is not made right away. The scam also involves demands for payment through gift cards, wire transfers or other non-traditional methods.
The notice states that the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies do not call people to demand payment or threaten arrest in exchange for immediate payment. It also says law enforcement agencies will never ask for payment through gift cards, prepaid debit cards or similar methods.
Residents who receive one of these calls are advised to hang up immediately. The alert also tells residents not to provide personal or financial information to the caller.
The Prosecutor’s Office is also asking residents to share the warning with family members. The notice says elderly relatives are often targeted by these types of scams.
