White Shark Spotted Off Jersey Shore

OCEAN CITY, NJ — A white shark tagged by OCEARCH was spotted miles off the coast between Ocean City and Sea Isle City Monday night.

Nori, a nearly 9-foot female shark, "pinged" off the coast at about 11 p.m. Monday. Sharks tagged by OCEARCH, a non-profit dedicated to studying sharks, ping when their dorsal fin breaks water. The organization tags sharks to further understand their migration habits.

She's the first to ping near the Jersey Shore this spring migration season.

"Bright, curious, and full of life, Nori is a young white shark exploring the cold, rich waters of the North Atlantic," the shark's description reads.

She was named Nori after the Japanese word for seaweed. Nori was initially tagged on Oct. 4, 2025 in Nova Scotia.

Nori, like other white sharks, is heading north this time of year to her summer feeding grounds in Atlantic Canada.

The organization's research has shown that white sharks spend their winters in warm waters off the U.S. southeast coast and head north in the summer to coastal waters off New England and Canada.
