OCEAN CITY, NJ — Ocean City is set for a busy stretch of spring events, starting with a student Arts Showcase on Saturday, May 9, at the Ocean City Music Pier on the Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace. The Ocean City School District event will feature work by students from the primary, intermediate and high schools. Admission is free.
The exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and a reception and recognition ceremony is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors also can take part in a Makers Corner with hands-on art activities for all ages. Live performances are planned throughout the day, including student musicians Jack McAllister on rhythm guitar and vocals, Aiden Hackett on lead guitar, Jack Chickadel on lead guitar, and a second group with Cooper Lloyd on guitar and vocals, Ryan Shelton on drums, and Miles Reischke on bass. The Ocean City High School Dance Team also will perform.
Prints and student works will be available for a donation to scholarships and student art programs. According to the event announcement, the showcase is sponsored by the City of Ocean City and the Ocean City Free Public Library with help from local businesses. Free parking will be available at municipal lots at Eighth Street, Moorlyn Terrace and Ninth Street.
The weekend schedule also includes the Spring Cruisin’ the Boards Car Show on Saturday, May 10. The show will feature cars from 1990 and newer on display from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the Boardwalk from 6th Street to 14th Street. The cars will parade onto the Boardwalk starting at 11:45 p.m., and a trophy presentation is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Music Pier. Looking ahead, Ocean City announced that “Shootout for Soldiers,” a lacrosse event that raises funds and awareness for veterans, will come to Carey Stadium on June 13. The event is described as a community-wide festival and is seeking teams of all ages and skill levels for informal games. Individuals without a full team can also register and be matched with one. Family activities, including games and inflatables, are also planned. Registration information is available by email at recreation@ocnj.us.
The city’s May calendar also includes Chica De Mayo at 10 a.m. May 17 at the Ocean City Skate Park, the Unlocking of the Ocean and Business Persons Plunge at noon May 22 at 9th Street Beach, the Memorial Beach Challenge for 31 Heroes on May 23, a Memorial Day Service at 11 a.m. May 25 at Veteran’s Memorial Park, and the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day on the Boardwalk.
