OCEAN CITY, NJ — Ocean City Theatre Company, in partnership with the Ocean City POPS Orchestra, will present "Sister Act" this August at the Bill and Nancy Hughes Performing Arts Center in Ocean City. The musical comedy is scheduled for Aug. 4 through Aug. 13 and will feature a live orchestra and a cast of professional performers.
Based on the 1992 film, "Sister Act" follows Deloris Van Cartier, a disco singer placed in protective custody after witnessing a crime. While hidden in a convent, she helps revive a struggling choir and, according to the production summary, discovers friendship, faith and community. The stage musical features music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater, a book by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, and additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane.
The production is being produced by the City of Ocean City and continues a longstanding collaboration between Ocean City Theatre Company and the Ocean City POPS Orchestra. According to the announcement, that partnership has become a regular part of the city's summer arts season, bringing professional musical theater with a full live orchestra to local audiences and visitors.
"'Sister Act' is the perfect summer musical," said Michael Hartman, Artistic Director of Ocean City Theatre Company. "It's joyful, inspiring, and filled with incredible music. Combined with the power of the Ocean City POPS Orchestra, audiences are in for an unforgettable theatrical experience."
Performances are set for Aug. 4, 5, 7, 11, 12 and 13 at 7:30 p.m. Matinee performances are scheduled for Aug. 6 and Aug. 13 at 2 p.m. Ticket prices range from $30 to $35.
Tickets are available online at www.ocnj.us/boxoffice, by phone at 609-399-6111, or in person at Ocean City welcome centers, including the Music Pier, City Hall, the 9th Street Causeway and the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
