LOWER TWP., NJ — A Villas man was charged after officers responded to a report of multiple gunshots near the Mulligan Sports Complex late Aug. 29, according to the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office and the Lower Township Police Department.
Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland and Lower Township Police Chief Donald Vanaman announced that officers were called to the area of the sports complex in the Villas section of Lower Township at about 10:37 p.m. on Aug. 29. No one was struck by any bullets, officials said.
An investigation by the Lower Township Police Department Detective Bureau and the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit identified the suspect as 20-year-old Leshaun Davis, according to authorities In the early morning hours of Aug. 31, members of the Lower Township Police Department Detective Bureau, Cape May County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit and the Cape May County Regional SWAT Team executed a court-authorized search warrant at Davis' residence in the Villas section of Lower Township.
Davis was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Lower Township Police Department. He was later charged with criminal attempt (murder), a first-degree crime, aggravated assault, a second-degree crime, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, also a second-degree crime.
Davis was lodged at the Cape May County Correctional Facility pending court proceedings, according to the announcement. Prosecutor Sutherland advised that there is no ongoing threat to the public and that the investigation remains active and ongoing.
