NORTH WILDWOOD, NJ — A Turkish man drowned off a North Wildwood beach Thursday, according to police.
At about 2:09 p.m., North Wildwood police, firefighters and the beach patrol responded to the 2nd Avenue beach for the report of a swimmer in distress, police said.
Multiple surfers had entered the water and found an unconscious man, 21-year-old Ahmet Yimenici, police said. Firefighters and the beach patrol immediately began life-saving efforts.
Yimenici was taken to Cooper University Hospital Cape Regional, where he was pronounced dead, police said. There does not appear to be any foul play, police said.
"Our hearts go out to Mr. Yimenici's family during this incredibly difficult time. I also want to recognize the quick actions of the surfers and civilians on scene. Their willingness to act without hesitation gave this young man the best possible chance, and we're grateful for their courage," said Chief Katherine Madden.
Authorities are reminding the public to swim in areas where lifeguards are present and on-duty.
