Authorities Search For Person In Somers Point Waters

Somers Point police, the Coast Guard and other agencies have conducted searches for the individual near the 9th Street Bridge.

SOMERS POINT, NJ — Authorities have been searching for a person in the water around Ninth Street Bridge. Agencies including the U.S. Coast Guard, Somers Point police, New Jersey State Police Marine Unit and Somers Point Volunteer Fire Company have participated in search efforts.

A witness called Somers Point police at about 8:30 p.m. Monday. They believed they saw a female jumping over the Ninth Street Bridge railing into the bay, said Somers Point Police Chief Robert Somers. The witness turned around and didn't see anyone walking out of the water, Somers said.

The Coast Guard sent a boat and helicopter to search, as police and first responders remained on the scene. The Coast Guard called off rescue efforts at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Surveillance footage showed what appears to be a female jumping over the railing into the water, police said. The footage doesn't show whether she swam or left the water.

Authorities don't know the person's identity, Somers said. The incident remains under investigation.
