Best of the Weekend Events in Ocean City: Sept. 30 to Oct. 2

From the OCHS alumni Red & White Weekend to a John Oates concert to the annual OCNJ Half Marathon, Ocean City has a full plate this weekend.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 30

The Ocean City Arts Center is sponsoring an OPEN MIC TALENT SHOW, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Ocean City Community Center, 17th and Simpson Ave. It is for singers, songwriters, duos, trios, guitarists, piano players and more. There are three age groups, 7-13, 14-17, and 18-24 with prizes for each age group. For information, call 609-399-7628.

The annual RED & WHITE WEEKEND reunion for all Ocean City High School classes includes a 4:30 p.m. , the 7 p.m. and a post-game at the Deauville Inn in Strathmere.

SATURDAY, OCT. 1

The annual will be held at the Tabernacle Grounds, 5th and Wesley Ave. from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and at homes throughout the City. There will be table sales in the downtown from 6th to 11th Sts. along Asbury Ave.

Maps with locations of sale spots throughout town will be distributed Thursday-Saturday at City Hall Annex, 9th and Asbury Ave., the Chamber of Commerce Information Center on 9th St. across from TD Bank, at various locations in the downtown and at the Tabernacle the day of the sale.

The RED, WHITE AND BLUE ALUMNI WEEKEND will hold its annual on Asbury Ave. starting 10 a.m. on Saturday. The parade will honor the 22 Ocean City High School alumni who gave their lives in the service of our country. An empty car will display the names of the fallen. Marching behind will be members from each branch of the military.

The : Registration is 10 a.m. in front of the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. This is a 3-mile walk from the Music Pier to 23rd St. and back on the Boardwalk to benefit our armed forces personnel. Opening ceremony will include a tribute to the military. Rock 'n Roll Hall of Famer will perform at the Music Pier
8 p.m. with his band. All proceeds benefit the Ocean City Education Foundation. Presenting sponsor is Ocean City Home Bank. Tickets are $35 and may be ordered by phone, 609-525-9300 or online at ocnj.us.

The in the downtown will conclude its season from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at City Hall Annex, 901 Asbury Ave, call 609-398-4662. Also Oct. 1-2. the Boardwalk and Downtown Merchants will hold table sales from 6th to 14th St. at both locations.

The Ocean City Fine Arts League, 608 Asbury Ave., will celebrate the lives of its founders Joe Kardone and James F. Penland at a SPECIAL SHOWING OF KARDONE'S WORK from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ocean City Gallery. Penland and Kardone founded the League in 2002. The organization showcases area artists and operates outreach programs, one of which assists disabled persons by encouraging them to express themselves through the arts. Penland passed away recently and Saturday's event will be a memorial to his life.

 

SUNDAY, OCT. 2

The starts 9 a.m. on the Boardwalk at 9th Street near the Music Pier. To register for Half Marathon, visit www.ocnj.us, click on Recreation Tab and choose Recreation Special Events.  Race Day Packet Pick-Up will be at Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, between 7 and 8:30 a.m. 5K participants may register day of race. The band RAVE ON will play the music of Buddy Holly and other legends of early Rock 'n Roll, 2 p.m. in the Main Lecture Room of the . Hear Buddy Holly hits That'll Be the Day, Peggy Sue, It's So Easy and Rave On. Call 609-399-2434 ext. 5231.
