Jack Kelly rows in the 1948 Olympic Games
Father and son working toward Olympic Medal

Jack Kelly Jr., heading to the 1948 Olympic Games in London, receives instructions from his father John B. Kelly. Kelly Sr. was an excellent coach as he had won three gold medals competing in the 1920 and 1924 Olympic rowing races. This picture was taken on July 22, 1948 aboard the SS America.
Jack Jr. did not win a medal, but he remembered the message on the scoreboard at the opening ceremonies: “The important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning, but taking part. The essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.”
