Cape Assist Cancels Endless Summer Benefit

Cape Assist has made the tough decision to cancel its largest annual fundraiser, Endless Summer Benefit, because of the continued challenges and restrictions associated with COVID-19.

Health and safety concerns factored into the decision, but Cape Assist -- a substance abuse prevention and treatment agency based in Cape May County -- also acted out of consideration for local businesses that have been affected by the pandemic.

“We are incredibly grateful to the many individuals, businesses, and organizations who have assisted and partnered with us during these difficult times to continue to offer our services and support to the community,” said Director of Communications Tusa Magalogo-Fitisemanu. “We understand that many businesses and individuals are struggling during these unusual times to make ends meet. It would be insensitive and inconsiderate on our part to directly request any sort of donations.”

Despite the many challenges of the last few months, Cape Assist found unique ways to stay connected to the community and continued offering assistance to those in need.

The agency adapted its treatment and prevention approaches to reach its clients. Counseling and treatment services were held in person – in compliance with all state safety protocols – as well as virtually.

“Human services don’t shut down during a crisis – they intensify,” said Executive Director Katie Faldetta. “Our team worked tirelessly to keep our lines of communication open. We were contacting and staying in contact with those in our care, figuring out solutions for those who couldn’t reach us virtually, accumulating supplies and resources for those running low, and anticipating the needs of those who wouldn’t ask.”

Cape Assist also transitioned support groups such as the Quit Center and W.I.S.E. (Wellness Initiative for Senior Education) Program to Zoom; co-hosted virtual resiliency training with renowned specialists for educators; and partnered with local organizations on community outreach initiatives including back-to-school drives, mask giveaways, and donation drop-offs, to name a few.

The agency regrets the need to cancel its signature fundraising event this year, but has already begun planning for a 2021 Endless Summer Benefit that promises to be bigger and better than ever.
