Cape May Beach Renamed In Honor Of Lifeguard Who Died Last Summer

Reading Avenue Beach was renamed to memorialize the 16-year-old lifeguard who died last summer after his patrol boat capsized.

CAPE MAY, NJ — A Cape May beach has been renamed to honor the 16-year-old lifeguard who died while on duty last summer.

Norman Inferrera III was killed last August when his patrol boat capsized in rough seas, officials said at the time. A high school student from Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, Inferrera was knocked unconscious when his head hit the boat.

On June 24, Reading Avenue Beach was dedicated as the "Inferrera Memorial Beach," the Cape May Police Department announced. Cape May Mayor Zachary Mullock and Cape May Beach Patrol Chief Harry Back unveiled the beach and performed the dedication. Mullock and Back also presented the Inferrera family with a plaque.

This year's CMPD Challenge Coin also honors Inferrera, police said. His initials "NVI III" are on the CMBP lifeboat on the coin.

"This year was extremely difficult for the Inferrera family and his extended family at the CMBP and City of Cape May," police said.
