Cape May County Driver Charged After Striking, Killing Pedestrian

Glenn Dunleavy, of the Del Haven section of Middle Township, was charged with leaving the scene after the hit-and-run, police said.

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP, NJ — A driver has been charged after he fatally struck a pedestrian in Middle Township, police said.

Glenn Dunleavy, of the Del Haven section of Middle Township, was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident after striking and killing Richard Geere, 59, of the Burleigh section of Middle Township, Middle Township police said. Additional charges may be pending, police said.

In the evening hours of June 20, Geere was crossing the intersection of Route 9 and State Highway 157 when he was hit by Dunleavy, police said. Geere was pronounced dead on the scene. Dunleavy had been traveling at "a high rate of speed" when he hit Geere, police said.

Dunleavy continued to flee the scene until he crashed his car in the 200 block of Indian Trail Road, police said. He then fled on foot, police said. He was located, arrested and lodged in Cape May County Correctional Center, police said.

Assisting were the Middle Township Crash Team, Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, Cape May County Sheriff’s Office K-9, New Jersey State Police Aviation Unit, Green Creek Fire Department, Goshen Fire Department and Rio Grande Fire Department.
