On Tuesday, March 26th, 2024, the Cape May County Board of Commissioners unanimously passed a Resolution requesting that the New Jersey Highway Authority strongly consider naming of the Ocean View Service Plaza after a local veteran and community leader from Cape May County. With overwhelming support from the members of the Board and as follow up to the Resolution adopted by the County’s governing body, Director Desiderio penned a letter to the Governor aimed at paying tribute to the heroic actions of a local distinguished and decorated war hero’s selfless service, hailing from the Goshen section of Cape May County, the late Andrew J. Tomlin.
Former Corporal (Cpl.) and later Sergeant, Andrew J. Tomlin displayed exceptional bravery and selflessness during his service in the Civil War, specifically in the Second Battle of Fort Fisher. Serving on the USS Wabash during the Fort Fisher assault, as one of 200 marines assembled to hold the line intrenchments in the rear of the fort, Cpl. (at the time) Tomlin refused to retreat in the face of enemy fire and remained in his position throughout the night until relief troops arrived. Cpl. Tomlin even at one point risked his own life to advance through active attack to assist a wounded solder struck by enemy fire. His heroic actions exemplify the values of honor, sacrifice, and dedication to duty that we hold dear in our State and Country.

In light of Sergeant Tomlin’s remarkable achievements and his deep connection to our County, the Cape May County Board of Commissioners urges the NJ State Highway Authority and Governor Murphy to rename the Ocean View Service Plaza in Sergeant Tomlin’s honor.
“Our Veterans often times unfortunately do not get the recognition that they deserve and hopefully in this instance, our State Highway Authority and Governor can do the right thing to honor one of our local heroes in a meaningful way,” said Director Desiderio. “By honoring this local hero, we can ensure that his legacy continues to inspire future generations and reminds all of us of the true meaning of service and sacrifice,” said Director Desiderio.
