Chris Breunig Retires As Ocean City Fire Chief

Breunig's retirement was effective Tuesday, Nov. 1. No new chief has been named, according to published reports.

Ocean City, NJ -- Chris Breunig has retired as Ocean City Fire Chief effective Tuesday, Nov. 1, according to published reports.

Breunig’s successor has not yet been named, but Ocean City Public Information Officer Doug Bergen told ocnjdaily.com that the city is close to doing so.

Breunig became fire chief in 2012 just before Hurricane Sandy, according to the report. The 1987 graduate of Ocean City High School was a volunteer firefighter in Marmora before coming to Ocean City in 1996.

He requested a voluntary demotion to deputy chief last summer to receive an extra $15,000 annually, according to the Ocean City Gazette.

He attempted to move to administrative deputy chief without affecting the jobs of the other deputy chiefs under state guidelines, but the mover was never approved by Mayor Jay Gillian, according to the report.

The chief’s salary is $126,500 a year as set by city ordinance. The three deputy chiefs all make more than that, according to the report.
