CMC Youth Participate in 2nd Cape Assist Sponsored Self-Care Event
Cape Assist partnered with No Limits Academy for their second youth-targeted Self-Care Saturday event.
RIO GRANDE, NJ – While many social media platforms and other online trends promote the term “self-care” as potentially budget-breaking luxury health practice, Cape May County Youth Resiliency Team is changing the narrative. Along with Cape-Assist, the Cape May County Healthy Community Coalition and other community partners, these non-profits are promoting mindfulness, self-soothing energy, as well as positive spaces that open their doors to the county’s youth.
“We’re here to tell the youth that you don’t need fancy cucumber face masks and expensive health supplements to practice self-care,” said Katie Faldetta, Executive Director for Cape Assist. “It’s important to teach our kids that self-care provides them the ability to build proper coping skills, healthy habits and productivity.”
Over 30 students, ages 13 to 18, spent the afternoon at No Limits Academy in Rio Grande for Self-Care Saturday, a mental health support day. From 10 AM – 2 PM, the event was filled with food, games, crafting, meditation, and even yoga. An extra hour was added to the day’s previous event program for attendees to have the opportunity to explore resource tables and interact with community partners, including Middle Township Police Department, the Cape May County Sheriff's Department, CARA, HopeOne, the Cape May County Bookmobile and more.

“After the first Self-Care Saturday in March, we knew we needed to host this regularly,” said Josh Mercado, owner of No Limits Academy. “We had such a great response from the kids who attended, and we really felt like we made a connection.”
No Limits Academy is a boxing and youth development center that supports the children of Cape May County to create responsible stewards of the community. The non-profit provides local youth with a clean, safe, and nurturing environment that utilizes boxing as a tool to develop children who are self-aware, confident, resilient, responsible members of their community.

The CMC Healthy Community Coalition is looking to bring the youth perspective to work being done in the community. The county Youth Resiliency Team is looking for motivated high school-aged students who want to prevent substance misuse and promote young people's overall well-being and resilience.
