Coastal Flood Advisory In Effect For Ocean City Wednesday Night

BREAKING: The advisory was issued Wednesday afternoon.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for Ocean City Wednesday night. It will be in effect from 6 p.m. to midnight, according to an alert issued Wednesday afternoon.

Water levels are expected to peak in the hours around high tide on the bay side of Ocean City at about 8:01 p.m. Wednesday. Flooding is expected prior to the high tide, and may last for several hours.

Rain and northeasterly winds are expected to contribute to flooding. The regularly predicted tide is among the highest of the year because of a new moon on Thursday. The Coastal Flood Advisory will likely be extended through high tide on Thursday evening at 8:50 p.m. Drivers are advised not to drive through flooded waters.

Forecasters project a tide that could exceed 6 feet on the mean low water scale. The January 2016 nor'easter (Jonas), by comparison, reached 8.46 feet on the same scale. Tides during a storm on Jan. 23 of this year reached 7.22 feet, and they reached 6.47 feet on April 25, 2017.

Residents are advised to move vehicles from areas that typically experience tidal flooding. The roads closer to the beach including Central and Wesley avenues are typically at higher elevation. These roads also offer the safest routes of travel across the length of the island.
