Council To Consider Naming Road Leading To Site 83 In Ocean City

It was an addendum to the agenda for Thursday's meeting, issued Wednesday afternoon.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — Ocean City Council will consider naming the road that connects Roosevelt Boulevard and “Site 83” when it meets Thursday night. Council meets on Thursday night, Feb. 8, 7 p.m. at City Hall, 861 Asbury Avenue.

Site 83 is used to store material that is dredged from back bays and lagoons in Ocean City. A temporary road had to be built to provide trucks a path to deliver the material. At Thursday night’s meeting, Ocean City Council will consider a proposed ordinance on introduction to name that temporary road “Haul Road.”

The purpose of naming the road is to carve out the 1.94 acre piece of land used for the road from the large block of land it is part of, according to the memo included in the agenda packet. Doing so minimizes permit fees associated with approval of the road by the regulatory agencies currently reviewing the city’s dredging permit.

“Permit fees are based on the size of the parcel being approved,” according to the memo. “The adoption of this ordinance is expected to result in substantial saving in permit fees, which will be based on the size of the road as opposed to the size of the entire block.”

The proposed ordinance was part of a revised agenda for Thursday’s meeting that was sent out Wednesday afternoon. Ocean City Council will also consider a proposed bond ordinance on introduction that would allocate $5,700,500 and authorize the borrowing of $5,415,475 in bonds or notes for various improvement projects. This would include $285,025 for several down payments.

Council will also consider a proposed ordinance on first reading to acquire land as a gift from Ocean City residents John D. Leahy and Ann M. Leahy. They own a home on the 5500 block of Central Avenue, and they also own property on the oceanward side of the bulkhead in that area. They are looking to give the land on the oceanward side of the bulkhead — which is already subject to a beach easement in favor of the city — to the city for no cost.
