County Officials to Hold Informative Session on Police-Involved Shootings

The session at the Cape May campus of Atlantic Cape Community College is set for Nov. 30.

The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and the Cape May County Chiefs of Police Association will host a program on use-of-force in police-involved incidents on Monday, Nov. 30, 7 p.m.-9 p.m. at the Atlantic Cape Community College, Cape May Campus, Room 212.

The presentation, titled “Uniform Statewide Procedures and Practices for Investigating and Reviewing Police Use-of-Force Incidents as it relates to Police Involved Shootings,” will provide the public with information on the state’s procedures regarding police officer-involved shootings as set forth by the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General Supplemental Directive 2006-5 amended July of this year.

The amended directive addresses seven core principles for maintaining the integrity of ongoing investigations:

  • comprehensive and impartial investigation;
  • maintenance and protection of integrity of ongoing investigations and rights of the accused;
  • mandatory review of all actual and potential conflicts of interest;
  • multi-tiered layers of independent review;
  • uniformity in statewide investigative and legal practice, including grand jury practice;
  • transparency of process and factual findings at appropriate junctures; and
  • ongoing outreach and study
