Dispose Of Hazardous Waste In Cape May County May 12

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority will host a Household Hazardous Waste and Electronic Waste Disposal Day in Burleigh.

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority will host a Household Hazardous Waste and Electronic Waste Disposal Day on Saturday, May 12, at the CMCMUA Transfer Station in Burleigh 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Transfer Station is located at 650 Shunpike Road.

The event is for Cape May County residents only who would like to recycle common residential chemical wastes or used electronics, and will take place rain or shine. Preregistration isn't required.

Items that will be accepted include:

  • Thinners and solvents;
  • Cleaning products;
  • Gasoline and other flammable liquids;
  • Automotive products;
  • Pesticides and herbicides;
  • Glues and adhesives;
  • Photographic chemicals;
  • Mercury-containing items; and
  • Pool chemicals.

Items that won't be accepted include:

  • Unidentified waste;
  • Explosives;
  • Radioactive material;
  • Aerosol cans (they aren't hazardous and can be disposed of as regular trash, once empty);
  • Paint, motor oil or antifreeze (recycling programs are available); and
  • Waste from regulated hazardous waste generators.

Oil- and water-based paints are accepted at the Burleigh Station during regular operating hours for $1.50 per gallon can and $6.25 per 5-gallon can.

Antifreeze, motor oil and motor oil filters are accepted at the station and Sanitary Landfill during normal operating hours. Antifreeze is accepted for free. Motor oil and motor oil filters are accepted for $1 per gallon or $1 per filter. There is a limit of 5 gallons and 5 filters per day.

Up to 25 gallons of liquid and/or 100 pounds of dry household hazardous waste will be accepted for free. Quantities that exceed these limits carry a $5 charge per pound or per gallon. Quantity limits are per vehicle, not per customer.
