Event Reflects On Tiananmen Square Massacre At Ocean City Library Saturday

OCEAN CITY, NJ — The leader of the Wukan Village uprising whose father remains in prison to this day will be one of the guest speakers during Amnesty International of South Jersey’s commemoration of the 28th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre. The event is set for Saturday, June 3, 1 p.m.-3 p.m. at the Ocean City Public Library, 17th and Simpson.

Zhuang Liehong will be joined by Democratic Party of China Coordinator Wen Xu and Translator Shiwen Cai during the presentation.

The Wukan Village of about 20,000 people rebelled against the Chinese government in December of 2011 after they learned one of the people they selected to negotiate with the Communist government died in police custody. Authorities said he died of a heart attack, but his family said hos body appeared as though it was tortured. The uprising continued with sporadic protests through last year.

Liehong fled to the United States in 2011, and continued the fight from here. In December, he led a protest outside Trump Tower urging the president-elect Donald Trump to pay attention to the human rights situation in Wukan.

The Tiananmen Square Massacre was given to the name of the uprising in which several hundred demonstrators were killed by the Chinese military during protests at Tiananmen Square in 1989.
