Fire Strikes Beachfront Condos In Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, NJ - Multiple beachfront homes were damaged in an early morning fire in Ocean City, officials said.

No one was injured in the fire, which was reported on the 4800 block of Central Avenue early Thursday morning, according to Ocean City officials. No one was home at the time of the fire, and no firefighters were injured.

Firefighters responded to the scene at about 3:30 a.m. to find the third floor of a beachfront duplex had been fully engulfed, officials said. The fire had also spread to the two homes on either side.

The firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading any further. They subdued the fire quickly, but the duplexes suffered extensive damage, officials said.

Two duplexes were destroyed and another was severely damaged, The Press of Atlantic City reports. The beach limited the fire department from putting another engine in the area to fight the fire.

Some firefighters stood on dunes as they battled the blaze, NBC 10 reports. Road closures were expected throughout the day. Video from the scene can be found below.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials said. Fire companies from Marmora, Strathmere and Margate provided mutual assistance, along with a TriCare EMS team from Somers Point, the Upper Township Rescue Squad and AtlantiCare paramedics.
