"Through this trying time, we will remember Chris for the father, husband, brother, son, and friend that he was, the moral character he displayed daily, and the courage and conviction to serve his fellow Americans, both at home and abroad.," Kentland VFD Chief Oleg Pelekhaty said.
Slutman received the Fire Chiefs Association Memorial Medal in 2014 for his actions in a 2013 all-hands fire in the Bronx, according to the FDNY. Slutman and firefighters made their way up the stairs to the seventh floor of a 13-story building.
Slutman crawled on the floor to find an unconscious adult on a bed. He and another firefighter took the individual past the fire and down the the lobby, where EMS took over.
“I have determined that Firefighter Slutman, did at peril to himself, perform a search and successful rescue of the occupant without the aid of a properly positioned and charged hand-line," Battalion Chief Joseph Regan said.
Slutman, 43, was one of three killed in the explosion, along with Robert A. Hendriks, 25, and Benjamine S. Hines, 31.
