Five Things to Know About Spring Sports in Ocean City

The spring season is underway for Ocean City High School sports teams.

1. Mother Nature is usually the first winner of the spring.

Even if it doesn't rain, the cold weather, especially with the wind blowing off the Atlantic in Ocean City can make life miserable for high school athletes and athletic directors organizing schedules.

The only good news is that that rare warm day in April feels a whole lot better than it normally would.

Ocean City's baseball, tennis and track teams already were affected. Friday's games were postponed due to inclement weather and wet fields.

2.  The Ocean City boys' track team has a goal to be a championship team this season.

The Red Raiders believe they have the depth to achieve that goal, and Saturday's Buena Relays are where they start their journey.

Teams from all over South Jersey converge on Buena in what has become the annual opening meet for the season. The teams will pair up in every event to see who will come out on top. Miles Schoedler and Erik Johnson will be difficult to beat in the distance events. The Red Raiders should also be strong in the hurdles, high jump and pole vault.

3. If you think it's cold out, try to being on the water.

The Ocean City girls' and boys' crew teams will take part in the second Lenape Sprint on Lake Lenape in Mays Landing on Saturday.

On Sunday, they will be at the Manny Flick race on the Schuylkill in Philadelphia.

4. The baseball and softball teams get in full swing next week.

The baseball team hosts Atlantic City on Monday, Vineland on Wednesday and travels to Lower Cape May on April 6.

The softball team is at Atlantic City at Monday, at Vineland on Wednesday and home on Friday against Lower Cape May.

5. The tennis team takes on rival Mainland on Tuesday.

The two teams will meet on the grass courts in Ocean City.
