Five Things to Know From Wednesday's School Board Meeting

Contract negotiations, new schedules and a new observatory in the works.

At Wednesday's public meeting, the Board of Education and on last year's NJ ASK tests. But here are five other things that might be of interest.

  • Principal Geoffrey Haines made a presentation on a new nine-period class schedule plan designed to allow more "time on task" for core studies, more student-to-teacher contact and more targeted instruction for students not proficient on standardized tests.
  • Board member Tom Oves reported that work on may begin next week, and a new scoreboard at Carey Stadium may be installed within four to six weeks.
  • Board member Joe Clark reported that contract talks continue with the three unions representing school employees. He said the district met with the Ocean City Education Association (teachers' union) on March 8 and will meet again tentatively on April 23 (with a Public Employment Relations Commission fact-finder). The teachers have worked without a new contract since June 2011.
  • The Board of Education recognized Matt Bosch for becoming the 11th Ocean City High School boys' basketball player to score 1,000 points in a career (Bosch finished with 1,163 points). The board recognized Julia Duggan for becoming the 11th girl to score 1,000 points in a career (Duggan did it in her junior year). And the board honored boys' basketball coach John Bruno for reaching his 300th career victory.
  • Board member Lloyd Hayes extended a special thanks to Mike Lukens and Wayne and Peggy Blizzard for organizing a . Noting that the event organizers have no children currently in the school system, Hayes said, "I am in utter awe of what this community does."
