Flooding Possible Around High Tides In Ocean City With Coastal Storm On The Horizon

Ocean City officials released a weather statement about possible flooding early this week.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — A Coastal Storm is expected to bring flooding to Ocean City Monday night through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service out of Mount Holly.

Water levels are expected to peak in the hours around high tide on the bay side at 10:14 a.m. Tuesday, city officials warned Sunday afternoon.

A tide that could reach seven feet on the mean low water scale is possible. By comparison, the January 2016 nor'easter (Jonas) reached 8.46 feet on the same scale, and tides during a storm on Jan. 23 of this year reached 7.22 feet.

Flooding is likely prior to high tide and may last for several hours. Vehicles should be moved from areas that typically experience tidal flooding.

The roads closer to the beach including Central and Wesley avenues are typically at higher elevation.

Parking will be available at the Trinity United Methodist Church at 20 North Shore Road in Marmora. Those who are considering taking advantage of the parking situation should read this letter from Trinity.

Snow and rain are expected to contribute to flooding. Sustained onshore winds of 25 to 35 mph with stronger gusts will generate storm surf that will prevent the back bays from fully draining at low tide.

Residents should secure loose objects on their property, and all contractors are asked to secure job sites.
