Gas Main Upgrades In Ocean City Begin Jan. 8

The goal is to replace aging bare steel mains with more durable plastic pipe.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — Construction work to enhance infrastructure in Ocean City as part of South Jersey Gas’s Accelerated Infrastructure Replacement Program will begin on or about Monday, Jan. 8, the gas company announced Friday morning. Work is expected to run through May.

Work will include the installation of 2-inch and 4-inch yellow plastic natural gas mains will take place along Asbury Avenue, Central Avenue, Wesley Avenue, West Avenue, Haven Avenue, Simpson Avenue, Waterway Road, Sunnyside Court, Bayland Drive, Bay Avenue, Roosevelt Boulevard, 36th Street, 34th Street, 33rd Street, 32nd Street, 31st Street, 30th Street, 29th Street, 28th Street, 27th Street, 24th Street, 23rd Street, and 22nd Street.

Work on 34th Street will be completed first, followed by work beginning on the Beach side of the island moving toward the Bay side. There will be unspecified lane closures and the closure of some narrow roads related to the project. Residents and businesses along these streets will have access to and from their properties at all times.

The goal is to replace aging bare steel mains with more durable plastic pipe, providing significant safety and reliability benefits for customers, according to the gas company. All excavations will be restored on a daily basis. A temporary repair will be made in most cases until the final restoration occurs. Openings in concrete will be temporarily patched with asphalt until final restoration with concrete occurs.

South Jersey Gas or its contractor will contact customers to gain access to properties with gas service to complete this work. Work will take place Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is a possibility that work will be performed some Saturdays in January and February from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
