Golf Coach Records 200th Victory, and Tennis Team Has Rough Week

Golf coach Skip Angelo earns the milestone with a win over Oakcrest. The tennis team goes 1-2 on the week.

OCEAN CITY GOLF

It has been an eventful start to the Ocean City High School golf season.

The Red Raiders (2-2) already played two of their most challenging matches of the season, took part in the Garden State Cup and gave coach Skip Angelo his 200th career win.

Angelo, who is in his 14th season, coached the team with Pat Dougherty for nine seasons before taking the helm by himself the last five.

The Ocean City golf coach recorded his 200th victory with the Red Raiders’ 160-189 win over Oakcrest at Blue Heron Pines Golf Course in Pomona.

Jared Ash led the Red Raiders with a 35, registering two birdies, and Brandon Bartley added a 40. Steve Pashuck and Dom DiGiacomo carded 41 and 44, respectively.

"It's nice to get win No. 200 before losing 200," Angelo joked. "That's a good thing."

He added: "It's a nice job. I'm a member over there at Greate Bay, and they treat the team like members. Teaching and coaching in a district like Ocean City, I feel very fortunate. Winning 200 before losing 100, you need good players. I feel very fortunate."

The Red Raiders haven't been as fortunate as they have wanted to be in some early matches.

Ocean City dropped two close matches to St. Augustine Prep and rival Mainland, two perennial Cape-Atlantic League powers.

"There are five really good teams in the league," Angelo said. "We believe we are one of them. We have to start winning the close matches.

At the Garden State Cup, one of the state's most prestigious tournaments, DiGiacomo, a freshman, shot an 80 to finish in third-place.

OCEAN CITY TENNIS

The Red Raiders have had three close matches this season. Unfortunately for Ocean City, it won only one of the three.

Ocean City defeated Oakcrest, 3-2, but lost to Vineland and Millville by the same score.

In the Red Raiders' win over the Falcons, Zack Shutz, Ocean City's No. 1, won his match, 6-1, 6-3. Ocean City's Tim Kernan won his third singles match, 6-3, 6-3.

The overall match wasn't decided until the Red Raiders' Jake Krutsick and Steve Perry won a third-set tiebreaker, 7-4, at second doubles.

The Ocean City duo won the first set, 6-2, but dropped the second set, 4-6.
