Hilarious Ocean City Video Vying for a Super Bowl Slot
An Ocean City High School technology coordinator recruits local surfers to star in a Doritos commercial contest worth millions.
Much of Ocean City knows Rob Kelly and Colin Devine as a pair of really good surfers. But the rest of the world may soon know them as the two idiots in sea gull suits.
Kelly and Devine are stars in the "Human Seagull," a video in the running to become a Doritos commercial during the Super Bowl. The pair were recruited by Steven Trauger, a member of the Ocean City High School technology staff and owner of a video production company, to create a video to enter in the national "Crash the Super Bowl" contest sponsored by Doritos and Pepsi Max.

From hundreds of entries, Doritos and Pepsi Max will choose six finalists–three from each brand–to be aired during the Super Bowl. Each finalist will receive $25,000. If the video wins the top spot in the USA Today Ad Meter (described by the company as the "national scorecard of Super Bowl advertising"), the creators will receive $1 million. If the homemade contest videos sweep the top three spots in the USA Today poll, each will receive another $1 million.
The commercial shows two guys on the beach jealous of the attention a couple of girls are paying to their Doritos. They get the idea to dress up as gulls once they see the girls chasing after one that has just stolen their bag of Doritos.
The commercial was shot on the 58th Street beach in October in 40-degree weather. It took a full eight hours to film, including makeup, setup and teardown.
Trauger partnered with Margate's Charlie Kulzer put together the concept for the commercial and put out a casting call that landed Philadelphia-area actress Laurie Halloran and 2009 Cherokee High School graduate Marena Montagnaro.
Local surf talent Rob Kelly answered one of the casting calls. Rob moved to Ocean City from Pennsylvania during his freshman year of high school and graduated in 2008. He has been living in Ocean City and traveling around the world to surf. Devine is a 2003 graduate of Ocean City High School and a manager at .
The filmmakers and cast will learn on Jan. 3 if their commercial is chosen as one of five finalists for the three Doritos spots. From Jan. 3 through the end of the month, the public can vote on the finalists to determine the top three.
