Historical Images: St Augustine Church

Our weekly feature includes photographs from the Ocean City Historical Museum collection and from the modern era.

This week's "Then and Now" features . The parish was dedicated in 1895, and the original church was located in the 1300 block of Asbury Avenue. The grounds for the church and rectory were purchased for $125 in 1893 from H. Gerlach, a Philadelphia jeweler, who was among the early members of the new parish. The original church building was renovated and expanded in 1904 and again in 1912 following a fire.

To accommodate a growing parish, a larger church was built in 1931 at 13th Street and Wesley Avenue. St. Augustine Regional School on Asbury Avenue was built on the site of the original church at 1337 Asbury Avenue in 1952.

The first image shows St. Augustine Church at its original location on Asbury Avenue circa 1920. The second image shows the now closed St. Augustine Regional School. The third image shows St. Augustine Church, now part of St. Damien Parish at 13th Street and Wesley Avenue.
