Independent Anthony Parisi Sanchez Seeks Congressional Seat

Parisi Sanchez opposes the idea of career politicians, and said he would run around "like he was on fire" to serve New Jersey.

After serving the Second Congressional District since 1995, Rep. Frank LoBiondo is retiring at the end of the year, and one of the candidates seeking his seat has an idea that would change the way business is run in America.

“We need term limits in Congress,” independent candidate Anthony Parisi Sanchez said. “Career politicians are just getting in the way. They don’t have to hustle for the people. They know the next election is bought and guaranteed. It results in poor leadership and people feel they are not being represented.”

Parisi Sanchez, who has campaigned for presidential candidate Ralph Nader and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy in his career, is pursuing LoBiondo’s soon to be vacant seat in the Nov. 6 elections.

The district covers Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Salem counties, and parts of Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Ocean counties.

State Sen. Jeff Van Drew is running as the Democrat in the election, and Seth Grossman is the Republican Party candidate. There are four independent candidates in the election, including Parisi Sanchez.

“Wall Street has unlimited influence over the elections, which is what our founding fathers were fearful of,” said Parisi Sanchez, who supports Murphy because “he’s making people believe they matter.”

The Bronx native said he’s conservative on some issues and liberal on others. Parisi Sanchez believes Citizens United should be overturned, says racism is still a problem in America, and recognizes that the #metoo movement is finally giving women a voice. He spent three years in the U.S. Marine Corps, and says America is too militaristic.

“Our military should only be used as a very last resort, but our policy is, ‘if you don’t listen to us, we’ll bomb you,’” Parisi Sanchez said. “ … Our military is too spread out. We should bring back the draft. … Every war is fought by the poor, but if (politicians) knew they were sending their kids to war, it would be different.”

He also echoes the belief by many that the country has become too divided.

“We are more divided than we’ve ever been,” Parisi Sanchez said, calling Washington a “hostile, self-entitled culture where there is no compromise. We don’t have a democracy. We have power brokers that have purchased elections.

“We need new leadership. We need more women, minorities, astronomers. We need more than two parties. We need 3-5 candidates on the ballot, new blood, more diversity.”

Parisi Sanchez said he has been working on campaigns since he was 18 years old, and he’s been an activist since he was 14. He worked on Nader’s 2000 campaign when he was getting attention nationally, but wasn’t able to get on stage for a debate with Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Al Gore.

He didn’t officially work on Murphy’s campaign last year, but said he worked heavily on his own to help Murphy get elected. Parisi Sanchez has run for political office, and gathered 652 votes in last year’s election for the First District State Senate election, won by Van Drew.

“I’m just asking for equal time,” Parisi Sanchez said. “I’ve been fighting City Hall and Wall Street my whole life, and I’m doing it the old-fashioned way. I’m calling people, knocking on doors. I don’t even have a website.”

He cited Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez upset of Rep. Joseph Crowley in the New York Democratic primary as a glimmer of hope that there is chance for new blood on the horizon. He wants to breathe that new life into New Jersey politics. And he wants to do it in two terms.

“I would run around like my head’s on fire to get stuff done,” Parisi Sanchez said. “I would do what’s best for South Jersey.”
