John R. Elliott HERO Walk Set For Sunday In Ocean City

The walk is a 5-kilometer walk and a 5K run to promote the use of sober designated drivers and reduce the number of drunk driving tragedies.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — The annual John R. Elliott HERO Walk in Ocean City is set for this weekend. The walk is a 5-kilometer walk and a 5K run to promote the use of sober designated drivers and reduce the number of drunken driving tragedies. That is the mission of the John R. Elliott Hero campaign.

Bill Elliott and his wife, Muriel, of Egg Harbor Township, founded the HERO Campaign in 2000. Their son, John Elliott, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, was struck and killed by a drunken driver on his way home for his mother's birthday on July 20, 2000.

The driver was previously charged with driving under the influence and released. He got back in the car while he was drunk, killing himself and John Elliott.

John Elliott distinguished himself as a Human Education Resource Officer, or HERO, at the Naval Academy. HEROs are elected by their peers to counsel and mentor other members of their company. He was selected as the outstanding HERO in his graduating class.

The HERO Campaign partners with schools, colleges, law enforcement, highway safety agencies, bars, taverns, professional sports teams and healthcare agencies to end drunk driving by increasing the use of designated drivers nationwide.
